Cape Bouvard Winery the Thorny Devil Brewery is the only winery and boutique brewery in the Mandurah shire. We are just 20 minutes’ drive south of Mandurah and about one hour south of Perth, just off the Old Coast Road.
The Cape Bouvard Winery and Thorny Devil Brewery is located on a prime waterfront location on the edge of Lake Clifton – home to unique Thrombolites: living rocks! This is one of only two places in WA home to the world’s first life form.
We are surrounded by grassed lawns, set in a grove of large Tuart and Willow Trees on the edge of Yalgorup National Park, where you can enjoy meals from our restaurant whilst taking in the vista.
Our outdoor rotunda is a popular family dining area near the picturesque vineyards which supply us with fruit for wine production. Our beer is also brewed on site. If it’s cold, sit inside by the log fire and enjoy your meal. You are also welcome to use our wood-fired barbeque.

There are many different levels of home brewers out there, from the ones that are completely happy doing extract brews, to the ones that might as well be working in a brewery. We’ve explored the beginner end of this scale for a while now, but today I’d like to introduce a term I use to describe those in the home brewing world that are a step above and make consistently great beer while expanding what they know every day. I call these people “semi-pro” brewers. These are the guys (and women, of course!) that push their brewing skills with complex beers, advanced brewing equipment, and generally understand the science behind the brewing skills we take for granted.
What Makes A Semi-Pro Brewer?
Semi Pro home brewers know how to propagate yeast correctly, understand the proteins and enzymes in wort and how to control them to make a beer correctly. They understand the ins and outs of mashing, above the basics of how to mash. These people can recover a failed fermentation and make what would be a failed beer a success.
These people might not want to work in a pro brewery, or are most likely waiting for their big chance to go pro and start doing their hobby for their full time job. Basically these are the people you ask questions of and will pretty much always get the right answer from. They know their stuff, and because of this, they are generally more than willing to share their knowledge or beer with anyone willing to learn.
I want to start focusing on some of these semi pro brewers that I know and let all of you learn a little but about them, too. Partially so you can see how to get to their level and extend your skills, but also so I can give these awesome brewers their time to shine.
So far the guys I’ve interviewed for this series have amazed me with their knowledge and willingness to share with any and everyone. It really goes to show you that beer is definitely a social drink.
More Coming Up
Along with this, check back soon for a bi-weekly series by a few of these guys where they will write about anything they want to, including what they’re brewing right then, as well as what issues they had and solved with their last couple of brews. Just another source of information for you and the craft beer community.
Needless to say, there are some pretty cool things coming up soon, including the relaunch of The Craft Beer Showdown Podcast.
