“Small batch” is one of those buzzphrases you hear a lot these days. You see it around so frequently. In fact, its meaning seems to have all but disappeared behind the shadow of marketing campaigns. Also with large-scale operations that seem to defy “small batch” at its heart. Thorny Devil reclaims the notion that craft beers really benefit from being handcrafted and local. Moreover, who’d have guessed?—small. A time when everything seems mass-marketed and impersonal.

Thorny Devil strives to provide irresistible flavours of crafted beer. We truly believe beer is about experimenting, exploring and having fun. Thorny Devil brews beers and ciders that ignite drinker’s taste buds. Thorny Devil is available at local events and festivals.

Good Beer Wheaty Festival

Good Beer Wheaty Festival

Pretty much a year ago to the day, the staff at Adelaide’s The Wheaty were sweating it out. In the hope that their recently purchased pilot brewery would be ready in time for their annual Good Beer Wheaty festival. Not only did they have an event based around a brew on the system but that brew was set to be a collaboration with Italy’s Birra del Borgo.

The system was up and running in time, but only just. Afterwards, venue co-owner Jade Flavell swore she would never put herself through a similar situation again. And she’s remained true to her word. This year, she’s magnified the size of the situation instead. They have just completed test brews on a system 12 times the size. Just in time for the Good Beer Week. Thus, are nervously awaiting the final paperwork in order to be allowed to make beer.

Collaboration of Breweries

Now that the brewery is – fingers crossed -€“ fully operational, planning can commence in earnest for the forthcoming collaborations. Last year, the beer created with Leo was called My Anchovia. A dark beer featuring anchovies that started life as a pun on del Borgo’s popular collaboration with Dogfish Head, My Antonia. And it looks like the anchovies will be returning.

The first collaboration is between the Yeastie Boys, Magic Rock and Birra Del Borgo. Discussions began between the breweries along the lines of the beer being something dark. A smoked porter was suggested. Then adding anchovies to the smoked porter. The second collaboration looks like being an oaty, hoppy affair while, when Darren Robinson from Doctor’s Orders rolls into town he intends to brew a beer based on gin and tonic.
