For today’s beer review, I am looking at a pretty awesome beer that’s tied to some pretty damn good music. Dogfish Head has made a habit out of developing beers along side some of the most interesting music of our time. There have been pairings with Pearl Jam, Robert Johnson, and even Deltron 3000. While all of these are good, today I am reviewing my favorite from the music series Dogfish Head has started. Today’s beer is Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew.

  • Brewery – Dogfish Head
  • Beer Name – Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew
  • ABV – 9%
  • Style – Imperial Stout
  • Serving Type – Large Bottle, poured into snifter
  • Brewery Location – Milton, DE
  • Availability – Limited Release
  • Color – Black, totally non-transparent, inky.
  • Head/Retention – Light brown head, reminiscent of coffee with cream
  • Aroma – Chocolate and coffee with a slight alcohol aroma on the end. Slight malty sweetness on the top with a hint of earthiness.
  • Taste – Chocolate and alcohol tastes win out, with some slight honey taste in the middle. slight coffee taste ties in nicely.
  • Finish – chocolate and malty with earthy undertones.

Overall Impression

Dogfish Head has a tendency to make what I call “Spice Bombs,” with tons of tastes mixing together, not letting individual tastes or aromas rise to the top. This beer is 100% NOT one of these. Bitches Brew is a mix of Imperial Stout and honey beer. The imperial stout wins out in this combination, and this is a good thing. The combination of these two types of “beers” is unique and works very well.

I feel like most every beer I review is a 9 out of 10, but I tend to only review beers I really like! I am saving the 10/10 for a truly outstanding beer.

This being said, I gave this a 9/10 because it is a really damn good imperial stout. The sweetness of the malt and honey is balanced well with the alcohol aroma and taste. The color of the beer as well as the color of the head match this style very well, and help support the overall impression of this beer. I highly recommend you try this one if you can. Read more about it at Dogfish Head’s site.
