Winter really is a great time for beer. The lighter tastes go into hibernation, and the deep, dark, higher alcohol beers come out to play. It is this time of year you find stouts, barleywines, and old ales. The beer we’re looking at here is from a favorite brewery of mine. Southern Tier makes consistently great beer, and Old Man is definitely one of the better ones.

Old Man has been brewed since 2003, and uses three varieties of hops, and two different malts. This beer is best enjoyed at 50-55* F. My review was slightly colder than this.

Have a look at my review of Southern Tier Old Man.

  • Brewery – Southern Tier
  • Beer Name – Old Man
  • ABV – 7.7%
  • Style – Old (Winter) Ale
  • Serving Type – Draught
  • Brewery Location – Lakewood, New York
  • Availability – Winter
  • Color – Brown with Ruby hues
  • Head/Retention – Off white head with good retention. Minimal lacing.
  • Aroma – Sweet with a slight citrus/fruity aroma. Gets better as it warms up.
  • Taste – Malty with a slight hoppy bitterness. Some alcohol in the middle but mild.
  • Finish – malty sweetness on the end with just a hint of hops holding on. Slight dryness to the finish as well.

Overall, this is a great old ale. Old Man holds it’s own in the old ale style. The mouthfeel is exactly where it should be for a 7+% beer, as well as the alcohol taste and content. The maltiness of this beer carries the other flavors, allowing some raisin, caramel, and chocolate flavors to peek through on the middle and finish. I really wish this beer was available year round, but it does make me look forward to the winter months knowing it will be out soon. Color and head are exactly where they should be for this beer, too. It’s just a nicely crafted beer.

Craft Beer Academy Score (out of 10) – 9

I gave this beer a 9 out of 01 because it really is a great example of an old ale. The hops are present, but not overpowering, and the malty character holds this beer together nicely. The mouthfeel is prefect with just the right amount of carbonation. The aroma matches the flavor and the undertones play well off of each other. Just a damn good beer.
