For this review, we’re looking at Rogue Double Chocolate Stout. In short, this is an amazing beer. Pack with chocolate goodness, this beer is a great representation of an Imperial Stout. If you remember from our post on Stouts, this supports the basic style very well, and fits the Chocolate Stout category perfectly. Let’s check out this awesome beer.

  • Brewery – Rogue
  • Beer Name – Double Chocolate Stout
  • ABV – 8.0%
  • Style – Chocolate Stout
  • Serving Type – Draft, 16oz
  • Beer Advocate Rating – 93
  • Brewery Location – Newport, Oregon
  • Availability – Fall/Winter
  • Color – Dark Black
  • Head/Retention – Medium tan head that recedes to a medium ring. Low head retention and no ringing
  • Aroma – Solid Chocolate aroma with a slight hop smell at the end.
  • Taste – Taste of bitter chocolate with a sweet malt backbone.
  • Finish – Slight bitterness on the end with a lasting taste of semi-sweet chocolate.

Overall, this is an amazing beer. The huge chocolate content of this beer really rules the taste factor, but still isn’t overpowering. It’s not too sweet, which is nice, but it still packs enough chocolate to go well with a dessert. The 8% ABV keeps the sweetness under control, too. This is a great beer.

Craft Beer Academy Score

Craft Beer Academy Score (out of 10) – 9

I give this beer a 9 out of 10 mainly because of how well the chocolate is balanced with the alcohol content and hops. The cascade hops shine through in this imperial stout and represent the style well, even with the inclusion of chocolate.

This beer would have a 10/10 if only for the price. It is fairly expensive, which is the only thing from making this a perfect score. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes a good stout.
