ADDING a bit of fizz to a core farming business can pay handy dividends.
Just ask Mark and Jenny Morey of Marenny Vale Orchards in northern Victoria.
The third-generation farmers, who produce 4000 tonnes of apples, plums, apricots and cherries a year from 100ha at Nathalia and Bunbartha, are toasting the success of a move into the growing cider sphere.
The Moreys established Cheeky Grog Co in 2004, which has transformed their secondary-grade fruit “worth next to nothing” into premium, award-winning cider.
As well as quenching the thirst of a growing clientele — with 50,000 litres of Cheeky Grog Co cider sold annually to a broad range of customers as far afield as Sydney — the move has helped position the farming business well for the future.
And in a sign of their commitment to the brand, the Moreys have opened an on-farm cellar door and this year have planted more than 3000 trees of heritage apple varieties in an attempt to create further points of difference.
“Back when we first started looking at cider (in 2000) we needed to do something with our juice-quality fruit — there was no money in juice in those days,” Mark said.
“You’d get paid $40 for a bin of juice fruit and it was costing us that just in transport.
“Now the cider juice is a premium product, it demands the same price we’re getting for our top fruit.”
MAKE A MARK
MARK’S family previously had orchards in the Goulburn Valley but he and Jenny got their start in the late 1980s when they purchased a rundown citrus farm at Nathalia.
