Great Beer. Fine Food

At this year’s Good Beer Week, there was a dazzling array of events pairing beer and food in every way imaginable. Beer and fondue, IPAs and curry, beer and chocolate and so on and so on. Beer went up against wine on the dining table, East Coast took on West, man took on woman and all in the spirit of fun, appreciation, education and raising the bar for beer.


One of the events The Crafty Pint was involved in was Good Beer Week Presents The Mega Dega. Following on from 2012’s Masterclass of Champions, where we brought together Moylan’s and Nøgne Ø at Hargreaves Hill for a live brew, masterclass and brewery floor feast, this was our attempt to do something that had never happened before in the world of Australian craft beer.


We paired five top brewers with five top Melbourne restaurants and asked them to create one course each of a five course degustation, with a sixth brewer, Cavalier, providing the beer for a beer cocktail to accompany the canapes. The breweries were Hitachino Nest, Birra del Borgo, Feral, Hargreaves Hill and Wig & Pen. They were paired with Izakaya Den, Merchant Osteria Veneta, Virginia Plain (the host venue), the Courthouse Hotel and Josie Bones respectively.
