The Citra hop is a high alpha acid hop with a strong, yet smooth floral and citrus aroma and flavor. This is a fairly new hop variety which has recently caught on and become as popular as it in intense in both aroma and flavor. The citra hops has recently been used in single-hop beers with more frequency. This is due to it’s intense flavor profile that it balances with a smooth taste. The citra hop fits into the idea of American pale ales and IPAs, as it gives a strong hop kick while allowing a solid flavor profile to come out.


Beers like Three Floyds Zombie Dust and Victory Headwaters are great examples of citra hop usage, while Sierra Nevada Torpedo show very little of this taste or aroma.


The Citra hop is purported to include parentage of Hallertauer, American Tettnanger, and East Kent Goldings. It is this combination that gives us the intensely citrus filled Citra hop. Because of it’s high usage as of late, the Citra hop has been labeled as a “hype hop” that is being used just to say it is being used. While I do thing some breweries are using it for this reason, it is a solid hop that holds it’s own, regardless of the hype.

  • Brewing Usage – Both aroma and flavor. (Dual)
  • Aroma – citrus, peach, lychee fruit. Tropical fruits come out on aroma.
  • Flavor – Often the same as aroma, with some added bitterness that in not detected on aroma.
  • Alpha Acids – 11-13%
  • Beta Acids – 3.5-4.5%
