Australian Breweries Busy In Introducing New Beers

Thorny Devil is one of the best and biggest Australian breweries across the country. It gives you all the needed information regarding the craft beers globally. In its first year of operation, Hog Island Beer Co. in Orleans grew beyond brewing for its seasonal tasting room and the adjoining Jailhouse Tavern, which the principals also own, to servicing an increasing number of taps in Cape restaurants and bars.

The brewery now has about three dozen keg accounts, and cans will soon follow in area package stores, says co-owner Mike McNamara. The labels have been designed and permits acquired.

“Right now we’re just waiting for the canning companies,” he says. “We hope to have cans shortly. Probably early to mid-June.”

White Shark Wheat and Outermost IPA will be the first beers available in six-packs, McNamara says. The IPA is the most popular seller of the brewery’s four core beers, which also include a pale ale and a stout. The brewery also makes a double IPA and a saison-style ale, and plans to do some one-offs, perhaps a pilsner, as well as collaborations with other breweries. McNamara says Hog Island and Wachusett Brewing in central Massachusetts worked together on a beer for the Jacob Wirth Restaurant in Boston; Otter Creek, Ballast Point and Samuel Adams breweries have expressed interest in collaborations. One natural spot for these joint efforts would be the brewery’s Drop In series.

“Drop in for surfing means drop into a wave,” McNamara says. “Also, (it) can mean different breweries to drop in.”

Balancing production growth with fluctuating demand in the Cape’s seasonal economy is tricky, but so far Hog Island has managed.

“It was a great first year,” McNamara says. “We never once ran out of beer.”
