Stone Brewing Co. located in Escondido, CA is teaming up once again with Ishii Brewing Co. from Guam and Baird Brewing Company in Japan to re-release a beer that was to be brewed only once, but thanks to the love it received, the collaboration has been renewed and as a result, we get to enjoy Stone Japanese Green Tea IPA one more time.
The original beer helped to raise $64,000 to help with relief efforts after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
While the original beer had extremely rare Pacifica hops, this re-release utilizes Australian Helga hops. Even though the rest of the beer was brewed to the exact same specifications, increases in efficiency at the brewery made for a higher ABV. The original came in at 9.2% and the re-release sits comfortably at 10.1% ABV.
As told by Stone themselves:
The beer has a massive hop presence, both in flavor and bitterness. It was dry-hopped twice, first with Aramis, Crystal and Helga, all of which contribute spice notes and the aromas and flavors of mango and pineapple. The second dry hop consisted of Sorachi Ace hops and the Japanese green tea addition. Sorachi Ace provides lemon and dill flavors, while the tea provides dry, herbal and, understandably, rich green tea notes. With a mild barley character thanks to the exclusive use of pale malt, the brewers were able to highlight a hop profile that’s harmoniously paired with distinct green tea qualities.
